根據光線的強度和照射角度，黃剛果燈看起來會有不同的顏色。例如在正上方的光照，牠是淡黃色透明的，在光線傾斜的情況下，牠的背部會呈現藍色的光芒，身體閃閃發光，好像鑲嵌著鑽石。所以，當這條魚游來游去時會有不同顏色的。在柔軟、略帶酸性的水中（pH值約為6）中，牠會表現出最美麗的顏色和長出更大的鰭。
